"It’s amazing what we can do when we come together. We dedicate our foundation to family members and friends whose lives have either succumbed to, or are currently impacted by, the ill effects of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes or obesity." Angela D. Byrd and Chef Jeff Hunt

HIS STORY
I lost my mom over 20 years ago to congestive heart failure. She was 72 years old and the love of my life. During most of my childhood, my mom suffered from health-related issues centered around heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. She experienced eight heart attacks of which five were major. One attack occurred when I was eight years old and she was driving at the time. Somehow I managed to take over the wheel to gain control of the car. Luckily, a police officer spotted us and arranged for my mom to be rushed to the hospital. That day, I helped to save her.
Although her diet was very restrictive, one day I discovered her secret stash of sweets that she kept hidden from us. As an adult, my growing concern for her health and the diet restrictions placed upon her inspired me to become a chef. I was encouraged to learn how to prepare healthy, tasty meals that she could enjoy.
I said goodbye to corporate life and culinary became my new world. If I can inspire and encourage others to live healthier lives through cooking and eating, then I know that the passion I have for my craft was well worth the sacrifice to learn about it. I've been a private chef and caterer for twenty years...greatly influenced by my dad who has provided many in Charlotte for 50 years with exceptional bartending and catering services.

HER STORY
I still live with the pain of losing my paternal grandfather more than 30 years ago. He was only 62 years old. He was that awesome granddad...hard-working, well-liked, highly respected among his peers, and greatly loved by his family. Physically, he was in good shape but his diet wasn't so healthy. It was filled with fried foods, sweets, and unhealthy fats. He and my grandmother did very well for themselves and lived a good life. My grandfather, like my grandmother, was my heart. He was the nicest, most generous man I have known. He watched me walk the stage at my college graduation. It made him so proud.
As he drove towards home from work one day, he suffered a mild heart attack. Fortunately, he was able to drive to the hospital and receive medical attention right away. During that time, his doctor along with his family urged him to stop working. It was time for him to retire but he refused to do so. He continued to work. As I was preparing to leave for a graduate internship in Connecticut, I received news that my grandfather died from a massive heart attack he suffered after just getting off from work. I'll never forget receiving that tragic news. It was devastating and painful for me to lose my grandfather so suddenly. I wanted one more time to tell him how much I love him. I miss him every day. I'm sure he would be proud of me today as I serve to help make a difference in the lives of others.
